Ambrosia Maple (Wormy Maple)

Ambrosia maple comes from regular soft maple and Hard Maple trees that have been infested by the ambrosia beetle. The small beetle bores a network of tunnels and short galleries called cradles. A fungus is responsible for the blue, gray and brown streaks and decorative patch work that accompany each tunnel and adjacent wood. The streaks and patch work add a unique look to this hardwood without affecting its structural integrity.

Even though Ambrosia maple may be more ornate with all of its unique figuring, it still carries the same tonal qualities of the classic maple sound. Maple is the quintessential drum tonewood and is a go-to in nearly every professional recording studio for an all-use drum sound. Maple toes the line perfectly between its highs and mids, and maximizes resonance with warm lows. This creates an even-sounding drum that provides the mix engineer with a blank canvas in the mix. Maple can fit in well with nearly any genre, but rock, soul and jazz have greatly benefited from a maple shell kit in the mix over the years.
