Cherry

Typically thought of in the context of cabinets, bursts or pies, cherry’s wide range of application has gained traction in the drum world in recent time. Designated as a tree from the Prunus genus, cherry has frequently been used as an inlay or veneer due to its status as an exotic wood. Full kits were all but unheard of until boutique companies began producing them over the decade.

Some say it is an alternative to maple, cherry shares the warmth of the popular wood, but that’s where similarities stop. Cherry, like bubinga and rosewood, is dense, giving drums extra muscle when projecting with a timbre darker than maple but short of that associated with birch. As aforementioned, cherry typically was reserved for the veneer ply of a shell; full cherry snares and sets often sport a natural finish, showcasing the wood’s unique, irregular grain. It has a light reddish brown (almost pink when first milled) color that darkens with age and when it is exposed to sun light.

You will find a Pelfrey Drum Works Stave Drum to be crisp and bright. It sings with boosted highs, punchy midrange, average low end. Thus the brightness and sensitivity makes this a great choice for an all-round great sounding snare for and style of music. Check out Stone Carter as he demos a 7×14 Cherry drum you will not be disappointed.
